Block of Granite for Burke and Wills Monument
This shows the block of granite which was quarried in 1864 for the monument over the grave of Burke and Wills in the Melbourne General Cemetery. At the time it was the largest single stone quarried in Victoria. Transported to Melbourne on the railway truck seen here, it was loaded onto a bullock wagon and took two days to make the journey from Spencer Street station to the Carlton cemetery.
