Burial of Burke

1911
Pictures Collection, H 13087

Strutt waited an extraordinary 50 years before painting this subject, but he still had the meticulous research notes and sketches which he had compiled in 1861.  The man in white shirtsleeves is Alfred William Howitt, beside him in a red shirt is Edwin Welch, and the man at right holding the spade is William Brahe.  First buried at Cooper's Creek, Burke's remains were later disinterred and taken back to Melbourne by Howitt for re-burial in the Melbourne General Cemetery.
