Castlemaine Hospital
25.2.60

Sir,

I take the liberty of addressing you relative to the source thro' which application should be made to obtain an appointment in the contemplated exploring expedition - being solicitous to offer my services.

I may briefly state that I am a member of the Royal College of Surgeons (Eng.), 24 years of age - that I have been in the Hon. Hud(son) Bay Co's service and since my arrival in this Colony 2 years ago I have been engaged in the various duties of my profession - and accordingly have acquired a knowledge of the various diverse portions of this Colony.

I have always had an earnest wish to travel - particularly in countries hitherto unexplored and should I be fortunate enough to join the expedition my utmost energies would be exerted to render myself of use in any capacity. I may state that my cousin is the Professor of Chemistry in the Sydney University.

At present I hold the appointment of Dispenser and House Steward of this Hospital and can obtain testimonials from the various officers - Honorary and Resident.

I remain Sir, Your most obdt Servant

Samuel Smith
